### Middle School

### 6th Grade (Advanced)

Mathematics 6 – Advanced includes a study of topics contained in both the regular sixth grade and seventh grade courses. Students will be expected to finish the 6th grade objectives and many of the 7th grade objectives by the end of this course. Sixth grade mathematics includes a study of number theory such as prime and composite numbers, factors, and multiples. It also will concentrate on data investigation by gathering, organizing and analyzing data and then making decisions based on that data. Additional work will include the study of rational numbers, the operations on rational numbers, measurement and probability. The seventh grade topics covered will include Similarity, scale factors, congruence and 3-dimensional measurement. The emphasis will be on problem solving and developing analytical thinking skills. Students will be solving advanced level problems.

### 6th Grade (Honors)

Sixth grade mathematics includes a detailed study of number theory such as prime and composite numbers, factors, and multiples. It also will concentrate on data investigation by gathering, organizing and analyzing data and then making decisions based on that data. Additional work will include the study of rational numbers, the operations on rational numbers, measurement and probability. The emphasis will be on problem solving and developing analytical thinking skills. Students will be solving advanced level problems.

### 6th Grade (Regulars)

### 7th Grade (Advanced)

7th Grade Advanced Math includes a study of topics contained in both regular seventh and eighth grade courses. Students will be expected to finish 7th and 8th grade objectives by the end of this course. Seventh grade mathematics includes study of introductory algebraic concepts such as variables, tables, graphs and symbols of representation. Similarity, scale factors, congruence and 3-dimensional measurement will be covered in the area of geometry. Additional work is done on positive and negative numbers, probability, rate, ratio, proportion and percent. The emphasis will be on problem solving and developing analytical thinking skills. Students will be solving advanced level problems. Eighth grade mathematics includes the study of linear relationships expressed in words, graphs, symbols, tables and solutions of linear equations. The Pythagorean Theorem, slope, area and irrational numbers will also be studied. Additional topics include exponential growth, quadratic growth and equivalent expressions. Transformations will be studied in the area of geometry.

### 7th Grade (Honors)

### 8th Grade (Advanced) – Algebra 1

This course is designed for students who have exhibited superior mathematical ability and are ready to study high school level work. The content of this Algebra I course will include a study of the real numbers and their operations, the language of algebra, algebra with multiple variables, systems of two variables, linear equations and inequalities, equation of lines, ratio, proportion and variations, polynomials, rational expressions, absolute value, radicals, and quadratic relations. Students will also explore rational functions, if time allows. Emphasis will be on problem solving and graphing. This course will require extensive use of graphing calculator. Students will receive high school credit and high school grade points.

### 8th Grade (Honors)

Mathematics 8 – Honors is a course for students who are competent in basic skills but who are not functioning at the abstract level needed for success in Algebra I. This course includes a study of basic operations, problem-solving techniques, introductory geometry, probability and statistics, graphing, and introductory algebraic concepts. Students who satisfactorily complete this course should take Honors Algebra I.

### 8th Grade (Regulars)

Eighth grade mathematics includes the study of linear relationships expressed in words, graphs, symbols, tables and solutions of linear equations. The Pythagorean Theorem, slope, area and irrational numbers will also be studied. Additional topics include exponential growth, quadratic growth and equivalent expressions. Transformations will be studied in the area of geometry.

### High School

### Algebra 1 (Regulars/Honors)

The content of this Algebra I course will include a study of the real numbers and their operations, the language of algebra, algebra with multiple variables, systems of two variables, linear equations and inequalities, equation of lines, ratio, proportion and variations, polynomials, rational expressions, absolute value, radicals, and quadratic relations. The Honors Students will also explore rational functions. Emphasis will be on problem solving and graphing. This course will require extensive use of graphing calculator. The honors students will study the same topics but at a higher level.

### Geometry (Regulars)

The course includes the study of fundamental concepts of geometry, lines, logic and reasoning, introduction to proofs, proving lines parallel or perpendicular, segments in a triangle, area and volume of two dimensional and three dimensional figures, circles, polygons with emphasis on triangles, congruence and similarity, introduction to right angle trigonometry, and transformations. We will also discuss the relationship between geometry, other mathematics, and other disciplines; and the tools for geometric representation. There will be emphasis on real world problem solving, hands on activities, use of graphing calculator, and project based learning.

### Geometry (Advanced/Honors)

The course includes a more challenging and rigorous study of fundamental concepts of geometry, lines, logic and reasoning, introduction to proofs, proving lines parallel or perpendicular, segments in a triangle, area and volume of two dimensional and three dimensional figures, circles, polygons with emphasis on triangles, congruence and similarity, introduction to right angle trigonometry, and transformations. We will also discuss the relationship between geometry, other mathematics, and other disciplines; and the tools for geometric representation. There will be emphasis on real world problem solving, hands on activities, use of graphing calculator, and project based learning. Additional topics in this course include advanced topics in trigonometry and detailed discussion on logic and proofs.

### Algebra 2 (Regulars)

This course includes the review and extension of the concepts taught in Algebra 1 along with several new topics. This course will include a general study of the topics such as equations and inequalities, coordinates and graphs, general functions, polynomial and rational functions, exponential and logarithmic function. trigonometric functions, analytic trigonometry, systems of equations and inequalities, sequences and series, complex numbers, binomial theorem, conic sections, matrices, and probability. Graphing calculator will be used extensively in this course.

### Algebra 2 (Advanced/Honors)

This course will require an in-depth and advanced study of advanced algebra topics such as equations and inequalities, coordinates and graphs, general functions, polynomial and rational functions, exponential and logarithmic function. trigonometric functions, analytic trigonometry, systems of equations and inequalities, sequences and series, complex numbers, binomial theorem, conic sections, matrices, and probability. This course will cover several topics in trigonometry such as right angle trigonometry, graphing trigonometric functions, trigonometric identities, law of sins and cosines, applications of trigonometry, double angle and half angle formulas, sum and difference formulas and solving trigonometric equations. Graphing calculator will be used extensively in this course. Throughout this course, students will develop learning strategies, critical thinking skills, and problem solving techniques to prepare for future math courses and college entrance exams.

### PreCalculus

This course is designed to cover topics in Algebra ranging from polynomial, rational, and exponential functions to conic sections. It will include a more rigorous study of exponential, logarithmic, trigonometric, and piecewise-defined functions, polar and parametric equations, vectors, dot product and cross product, complex numbers, probability and statistics, matrices and determinants. This course will include a detailed study of trigonometric concepts such as unit circle, trigonometry of right triangle, law of sine’s and cosines, solving trigonometric equations, graphs of trigonometric functions and their inverses, properties of trigonometric functions, and applications of trigonometry. Students will then begin analytic geometry and calculus concepts such as limits. This class is important for any student planning to take college level Calculus class. This class will be taught at AP level and the topics in this class will directly lead to AP Calculus.

### AP Calculus

This course is an overlay to Richland Calc 1 and Calc 2 courses. Students taking this course must complete both Calc 1 and Calc 2 courses in Richland. This course will focus on the topics included in the AP calculus exam. In this course students will work with functions represented in a variety of ways. They will understand the meaning of derivative in terms of a rate of change and local linear approximation and they will learn to use derivatives to solve a variety of problems. They will also learn the meaning of a definite integral both a limit of Riemann sums and as the net accumulation of change, and the use of integrals to solve a variety of problems. Students will understand the relationship between the derivative and the definite integral as expressed in the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus.
