Grade 3: COMMUNICATION SKILLS

Listening
  • Listen to and follow multi-step directions
  • Listen attentively to others in the group and to the teacher
  • Listen to presentations/stories/movies/guest speakers
Speaking
  • Express and justify ideas and opinions with guidance
  • Present to a range of audiences confidently with appropriate volume

Reading

 Grade 3: RESEARCH SKILLS

Formulating Questions
  • Formulate open ended questions about research topics from personal interest or by brainstorming with others
  • Pose purposeful, open, realistic and investigative questions
Observing
  • Apply the five senses when observing during multi-step experiments
  • Create ideas to conduct investigative experiments
Planning
  • Discuss and describe what is to be done to complete research objectives
  • Identify priorities and divide tasks into simple steps
  • Set target dates for tasks
Collecting Data
  • Recognize keywords for searching books and dictionaries
  • Identify areas within the school library and locate resources in these areas
  • Use Destiny Quest
  • Collect information using student-initiated surveys, interviews, and reference texts
  • Begin to select useful information resources, including maps, timelines, and graphs
  • Begin to browse and search on the Internet with teacher guidance
  • Understand that newspapers, databases, expert interviews and digital tools can be sources of information

Recording Data
  • Use appropriate medium to record information

Organizing Data
  • Organize information logically, according to the purpose, and audience

Interpreting Data
  • Draw conclusions based on organized data
  • Narrow or modify research focus as needed to clarify data

Gross motor skills

  • Write legibly using appropriate spacing and direction with control
  • Manipulate handheld tools with increased precision and attention to detail

  • Visual information and writing is organized, formatted, and presentable
Organization
  • Retrieve and return materials independently
