English/Language Arts

Students will be able to comprehend with increasing accuracy what they hear in conversations and in stories read aloud. They will demonstrate an understanding through their questions, comments, and actions. Pre-K students will gain the ability to use language in a variety of settings. They become increasingly able to describe wants and needs, carry on a conversation with others, and share information with both peers and adults. The skill to engage others in conversations involves asking questions, listening, responding, as well as using verbal and nonverbal expressions.

Students will engage in activities that build on their natural curiosity and prior knowledge to develop their reading, writing, and oral language skills. Students will understand how English is written and printed. They will display phonological awareness. They will use the relationships between letters and sounds, spelling patters, and morphological analysis to decode written English.
