Science

Pre-K - 5th

Pre-Kindergarten

Students will use learn to explore properties of materials, positions, and motion of objects through investigations which allow them to notice the attributes of each of these. These explorations using the five senses continue as students use attributes to classify and sort objects, make observations and predictions, problem-solve, compare and question. Students learn about sources of energy by investigating and discussing light, heat, electricity, and magnetism. This builds early understanding of life science, physical science, earth science and chemistry. Processes such of observing and recording data, posing questions, predicting, investigating and drawing conclusions can provide experiences to support literacy, math and sciences.

Kindergarten

Students will observe and describe the natural world using their senses. Students will use science as inquiry to develop and enrich their abilities to understand scientific concepts and processes. Students will develop vocabulary through their experiences investigating properties of common objects, earth materials, and organisms. Students will conduct classroom and outdoor investigations following home and school safety procedures and will use environmentally appropriate and responsible practices.

Grade 1

Students will use age appropriate tools and models to investigate the natural world and develop abilities to ask questions and seeks answers in classroom and outdoor investigations. They will learn how force, motion, and energy are a part of everyday life. They will also learn that the natural world includes rocks, soils, and water that can be observed in cycles, patterns, and systems.

Grade 2

Students will use age appropriate tools and models to investigate the natural world and develop abilities to ask questions and seeks answers in classroom and outdoor investigations. They will learn that matter has physical properties and those properties determine how it is described, classified, changed, and used. They will also learn about different forms of energy, the natural world, and the basic needs that need to be met for organisms to survive in their environment.

Grade 3

Students will use age appropriate tools and models to investigate the natural world and develop abilities to ask questions and seeks answers in classroom and outdoor investigations. They will learn that matter has physical properties and those properties determine how it is described, classified, changed, and used. They will also learn about different forms of energy, natural resources, and how organisms have characteristics that help them survive in the natural world.

Grade 4

Students will use age appropriate tools and models to investigate the natural world and develop abilities to ask questions and seeks answers in classroom and outdoor investigations. They will learn that matter has physical properties and those properties determine how it is described, classified, changed, and used. They will learn about different forms of energy, interactions between living organisms in their environments, and the patterns in the natural world and among the Sun, Earth, and Moon system.

Grade 5

Students will use age appropriate tools and models to investigate the natural world and develop abilities to ask questions and seeks answers in classroom and outdoor investigations. They will learn that matter has physical properties and those properties determine how it is described, classified, changed, and used. They will learn about different forms of energy, Earth’s different resources, and the patterns in the natural world and among the Sun, Earth, and Moon system.
